A warm, soulful hour built on big voices and the kind of classics that never date. We open with Ayro’s “Bounce” in DJ Spinna’s mix – a broken, nu-jazz roller that did the rounds as a white-label promo in its day and still swings like nothing else. John Oudo keeps the vocal warmth flowing on the deep instrumental of “Loving You” before Irfan Rainy & Rex Leon take us to Manchester with the afro-tinged “Singer Of Songs”, the Mancunian duo pulling in friends from New York to Lagos on their long-running Rainy City Music. Hardsoul and the unmistakable Shaun Escoffery bring it back to pure soulful house on “No Man”, and Erick Morillo’s dubbier “Dancin” settles the groove.
From there we dig a little deeper – Joey Negro’s Akabu project gives us a proper dub-and-acapella moment, the “Phuture Bound” vocals riding over the “Don’t Hold Back” instrumental, before Satoshi Tomiie strips it back to the essentials on “Bassline” with Black Magic’s “Freedom” acapella floating over the top. We save the most spiritual records for last: Jamie Lewis & Michelle Weeks’ “The Light” in the Jazz-N-Groove prime-time dub – a genuine piece of dance-music history out of Purple Music – followed by Kerri Chandler’s “Heal My Heart” and “Love Calls” to send it home.
